What are the symptoms of atrial septal defect in adults

Symptoms of atrial septal defects in adults vary in severity, with mild cases being asymptomatic and more severe cases having symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue. In more severe cases, symptoms such as shortness of breath and fatigue may occur. Some cases may be accompanied by cyanosis.
Some people with mild atrial septal defects may be asymptomatic and are only detected on examination. In more severe cases, symptoms such as palpitations on exertion, shortness of breath, fatigue, cough and hemoptysis may occur.
Most do not show cyanosis, but when a right-to-left shunt is present, cyanosis can occur, resulting in Eisenmenger’s syndrome. Also, some may be associated with symptoms such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation, and other arrhythmias.
If atrial septal defect is present, it should be taken seriously and followed up regularly. If there is any discomfort, it is recommended to seek prompt medical attention for diagnosis and treatment.
