How long does it take for temporomandibular arthritis to heal on its own?

Whether and how long it takes to heal itself depends on the severity of the patient’s condition, and cannot be generalized. In early TMJ disorder syndrome, the symptoms are usually mild restriction of mouth opening, discomfort or pain in the joint area only, mostly due to biting hard objects or trauma. In this case, TMJ disorder syndrome can generally heal itself through treatment such as heat application and physical therapy in the joint area, but the time of self-healing may vary from 2 weeks to several months. However, it should be noted that some patients may develop into irreversible TMJ disorder syndrome without timely intervention, causing organic lesions of the joint structure, such as irreversible anterior displacement of the disc, perforation of the joint disc, and destruction of the condylar bone, etc. At this time, the chance of self-healing is lost, and surgical procedures are required to restore the normal function of the TMJ. In conclusion, once the diagnosis of TMJ disorder syndrome is confirmed, the first thing you should do is to control your diet, i.e. not to chew hard objects with your mouth wide open, hold your chin when yawning, pay attention to the warmth of the joint area, and apply heat physiotherapy appropriately, and go to the dental hospital in time if you have any discomfort.
