National Health Commission: zero new does not equal zero risk

The joint prevention and control mechanism of the State Council held a press conference on March 23 on the latest situation of preventing and controlling the importation of epidemics from abroad according to the law. Mi Feng, spokesman for the National Health Commission and deputy director of the Department of Publicity, said at the conference that it has been two months since January 23, when Wuhan closed the channel to China, and after strenuous efforts, there have been no new confirmed or suspected cases of coronary pneumonia in Hubei and Wuhan for five consecutive days, and the number of existing confirmed cases continues to decline. But it must also be recognized that “zero new” does not equal zero risk, there is still the possibility and potential for the emergence of epidemic and even aggregated cases, the task of prevention and control of the epidemic is still arduous and heavy. The National Health Commission informed the same day that on March 22, 0:00-24:00, 39 new cases of confirmed cases were reported overseas, including 10 cases in Beijing, 10 cases in Shanghai, 6 cases in Fujian, 6 cases in Guangdong, 2 cases in Shandong, 2 cases in Gansu, and 1 case each in Zhejiang, Henan and Chongqing. As of 24:00 on March 22, a total of 353 confirmed cases were reported to be imported from abroad. Mi Feng pointed out that with the increasing number of cases worldwide, many countries require individuals to stay at home for self-isolation.
