Can you drink licorice water when you’re pregnant?

Glycyrrhiza glabra is the dried root and rhizome of the leguminous plant Glycyrrhiza glabra, Glycyrrhiza inflata or Glycyrrhiza glabra. It is sweet in flavor, neutral in nature, and belongs to the heart, lung, spleen and stomach meridians. It has the effects of tonifying the spleen and benefiting the qi, clearing away heat and detoxifying toxins, easing pain (relieving more urgent pain symptoms), expelling phlegm and relieving cough, and harmonizing various medicines (harmonizing the properties of different traditional Chinese medicines).
Licorice is used for weak spleen and stomach, tiredness, palpitation, shortness of breath, cough and phlegm, spasmodic pain in the epigastrium (abdomen) and limbs, carbuncle, swelling and sores, and relieving toxicity and potency of drugs.
Licorice adverse reactions are not clear, should not be used with seaweed, red halibut, Beijing halibut, coriander, glycyrrhiza. At present, the Chinese Pharmacopoeia does not specify that pregnant women are prohibited or cautious use of licorice, so women can drink licorice water when they are pregnant, but dampness and bloating, edema should not be used, and should not be large doses for a long time.
Licorice water can play a limited medicinal effect, can not replace the drug treatment of disease. If there is a need for medication, it is recommended that it be used under the guidance of a professional physician, not blindly self-medication.
