How to take Poria

In clinical practice, Poria is mostly used in decoction for internal use. Poria has the effects of inducing diuresis and seepage of dampness (promoting the movement of water to dispel dampness), strengthening the spleen, and tranquilizing the heart. Poria, sweet and light in flavor, is flat in nature. It belongs to the heart, lung, spleen and kidney meridians. Clinically, it is used in treating edema and urination, phlegm-drinking palpitations (caused by phlegm-drinking (pathological products of impaired metabolism of water and fluid) and palpitations), deficiency of the spleen with low food intake, loose stools, diarrhea, restlessness of the mind, palpitations and insomnia, etc. It is also used in treating the symptoms of water-dampness stagnation. If it is used to treat water-dampness stagnation resulting in dysuria (unruly urine) and edema, it can be paired with Gui Zhi and Bai Zhu; to treat edema caused by yang deficiency of the spleen and kidney, it can be used with Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori (Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori) and Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori (Radix et Rhizoma Polygoni Multiflori); for treating vomiting caused by the stagnation of water and dampness, it can be used with Ginger and Bianxia. In addition, if Poria is used to treat tiredness and fatigue of spleen deficiency, and loose stools with little food, it is often used with ginseng and atractylodes; to treat diarrhea and diarrhea with spleen deficiency and dampness, it is often used with dangshen (Codonopsis pilosula), atractylodes, and Chinese yam; and if dampness is more serious, it is used with ginseng, atractylodes, and coix lacryma. It should be noted that, Yin deficiency without dampness and heat, cold and slippery semen, qi deficiency and subsidence should be taken with caution.
