The difference between barium meal and gastroscopy

Modern people work under high pressure and are prone to mental anxiety, so if they eat irregularly or overeat, they are likely to get stomach problems. There are different ways to examine the stomach, and today we will talk about the difference between gastroscopy and barium meal: Gastroscopy is currently the most accurate way to diagnose esophageal and gastrointestinal diseases, and is known as the gold standard of stomach examination, which has its irreplaceable role compared to barium meal. Gastroscopy is performed mainly through a thin soft gastric tube with an endoscope at the front end, passing through the mouth, esophagus, stomach and duodenum, and the doctor can clearly see the subtle lesions in the digestive tract through the display. However, some people cannot tolerate gastroscopy or have other medical conditions that prevent them from undergoing gastroscopy. Barium meal angiography is the barium gastrointestinal tract angiography, mainly using barium sulfate impervious to X-rays as a contrast agent, after oral use, with the distribution and location of barium sulfate in the stomach changes, the outline and movement of the digestive tract under X-rays, is thus indirectly check whether there are lesions in the gastrointestinal tract. Barium meal imaging is mainly by using oral contrast agent and then observing whether there are lesions in the whole digestive tract, especially for the diagnosis of augmented lesions and depressed lesions. It is also possible to see whether the contrast agent can pass through the digestive tract and whether there are any power disturbances or obstructive changes. The test is not as visual as gastroscopy, cannot take biopsies for pathology, and is difficult to detect some flat lesions, but does not have the pain of gastroscopic intubation. Both gastroscopy and barium meal examination have their own advantages and disadvantages, and it is best to consult a gastroenterology clinician at a major hospital to decide what examination is appropriate for your condition.
