Most tears of the supraspinatus tendon are caused by traumatic injury, which can lead to injury to the shoulder joint, and in severe cases, can lead to rupture of the supraspinatus tendon, which is often referred to as rotator cuff injury. Chronic strain on the supraspinatus tendon, such as frequent activity, can cause hematoma and calcification of the supraspinatus tendon, which can lead to laxity of the supraspinatus tendon and ligaments and subsequent tearing of the supraspinatus tendon after the injury. Whatever the cause of the supraspinatus tendon tear, an MRI of the shoulder joint should be performed, and the treatment should be tailored to the extent of the injury and the patient’s wishes.
