Glaucoma can cause optic nerve damage and visual field defects. Many patients ask if their vision can be improved and their visual field can be improved once their IOP is controlled. I regret to tell you that this is not possible. The damage to the optic nerve and visual field caused by high IOP is irreversible and cannot be restored by current treatments. Glaucoma treatment can only maintain the status quo so that the disease does not progress and vision and visual field remain the same as before. So can glaucoma be cured once without recurrence? In the case of primary closed-angle glaucoma early on it can be cured, and by having the atrial angle closed by laser, many patients will never have a recurrence in their lifetime, but the vast majority of glaucoma cannot be cured. Glaucoma is a lifelong disease, and like diabetes and hypertension, treatment is needed to control intraocular pressure; regular follow-up is required during treatment to adjust the treatment plan according to changes in the condition.
