People who do not meet the indications of Si-Wei-San should not take it. Si-Wei-San is mainly used for the evidence of yang-depression and syncope (poor circulation of yang qi leading to cold limbs) and the evidence of disharmony between the liver and spleen. Sihui San is composed of Chai Hu, Paeoniae Alba, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae Praeparatae and Citrus Aurantium, which have the efficacy of dispersing the liver and regulating the spleen. It can be used for Yang depression and syncope, which is characterized by lack of warmth in the hands and feet, abdominal pain, or discharge of heavy weight under the abdomen, and a stringy pulse; and Liver and Spleen disharmony, which is characterized by distension of the coarsely ribbed area, pain in the epigastric region (the stomach and the abdomen), and a stringy pulse. In this formula, Chai Hu can relieve depression and dredge the liver, so that the evil can go out; Bai Shao can nourish blood and soften the liver; Citrus aurantium can relieve depression and regulate qi, break up the knot and drain away the heat, which is used together with Chai Hu to increase the effect of relaxing the qi; Glycyrrhiza glabra is beneficial to the spleen and neutralizes the middle, and regulates all the medicines (regulating the properties of different Chinese medicines). The combination of these four herbs is effective in dispersing the liver and regulating the spleen by dispersing evils and relieving depression.
