What is the function of the meniscus

The function of meniscus is to stabilize the knee joint, reduce knee friction, cushion and protect articular cartilage.
1. Stabilize the knee joint: meniscus is located in the medial and lateral side of the knee joint, the coronal surface is similar to a triangular structure, the inner and outer meniscus as a whole form a concave fossa to undertake the femoral condyles, connected to the joint capsule, and with the help of cruciate ligaments together to stabilize the knee joint.
2. Reduce knee friction: meniscus belongs to the fibrocartilage, both the toughness of the fibrous tissue, but also has the elasticity of the cartilage tissue, smoothness, located between the tibia and the femoral condyles can alleviate friction in the knee joint activities.
3. Cushioning and protection of articular cartilage: the meniscus is located between the tibia and the femoral condyles can cushion the impact of the femur and tibia, and thus protect the cartilage of the joint weight-bearing area.
