How long it takes for the swelling of an ankle fracture to heal is mainly related to the severity of the fracture, the severity of the soft tissue injury, and whether it is accompanied by venous disease of the lower extremity. If the ankle fracture is simple and there is no lower extremity vascular disease, the swelling period is usually about one month. If the ankle fracture is more comminuted and accompanied by serious soft tissue contusions, the swelling period of the fracture site will be greatly extended, usually to about three months. If the patient also has lower extremity vascular diseases, such as lower extremity deep vein varicose, lower extremity vein thrombosis, etc., the ankle fracture swelling receding period will be extended even more, usually up to about six months.
