When an acid or alkaline chemical injury occurs, rinse immediately with plenty of water. Flush by turning the eyelid and rotating the eye to flush out as much of the chemical as possible for at least 30 minutes. Immediately after flushing, go to a regular eye care provider, flush again with plenty of saline, and carefully examine the extent of the chemical injury damage and treat accordingly. If only conjunctival burns are present, apply pralofin eye drops, one drop four times a day. If there is corneal epithelial damage, anti-infective medications such as tobramycin drops, one drop three times a day, should be given. Also give drugs that promote corneal epithelial repair, such as recombinant bovine basic fibroblast growth factor eye drops, one drop three times a day. If there are complications such as lid adhesions, treatment of the complications needs to be performed.
