How much does a bone puncture hurt?

Bone marrow puncture is an invasive test, so there is definitely pain associated with having a bone marrow puncture. How painful a bone marrow puncture is depends on the level of sensitivity of the patient to pain at the level of the surgeon performing the bone marrow puncture. If the surgeon who performs the bone marrow puncture is a very experienced and skilled surgeon, and if the anesthesia is adequate and the technique is done correctly, the patient will feel little pain, only a slight pain during the anesthesia or when the bone marrow is extracted. Most of the patients will say that they feel almost no pain after the bone marrow aspiration. However, if the anesthesia is inadequate or the technique used to perform the bone marrow puncture is incorrect, the pain is often more intense or even unbearable. Some people are naturally sensitive to pain and will feel severe pain. If people are not sensitive to pain, they can tolerate bone marrow puncture in general.
