In order to control blood sugar and reduce complications, diabetic patients can only rely on firm belief and hard work, just as they want to achieve success in their career. On the Internet and TV commercials, I always see people bragging about drugs or treatments that can cure diabetes without diet control, medication or injections. Obviously, I do not have the ability to do so, so I can only hope that my patients can trust the doctors in the regular hospitals and improve their discernment. In my clinical work, I often face the following questions from patients, and I would like to give a brief explanation here: Will I become dependent on insulin after using it, so that I can’t quit it later? Some patients always talk about insulin and think that insulin use is like drug addiction and they can never quit after using it. Insulin is a hormone produced by healthy people to lower blood sugar, and it is produced by pancreatic beta cells stimulated by glucose, while diabetic patients have a reduced ability of pancreatic beta cells to produce insulin due to various reasons. There are two clinical situations in which we apply insulin to patients (the following is expressed in layman’s terms to help patients understand better only): The first situation: some patients with initial type 2 diabetes: the pancreatic beta cells continue to be damaged and die, and only when less than half of the living cells are left do they show a mild increase in blood glucose. If the patient is unaware or does not pay attention to it, the remaining cells work overtime and are exhausted, and some of them die of exhaustion and some of them go on strike. At this time, the patient shows clinical symptoms, such as excessive drinking, excessive eating, excessive urination and weight loss, and the patient’s blood sugar can be very high. At this time we appropriately supplement exogenous insulin, we can let those striking beta cells get a rest, and they can slow down and continue to work after a period of time, that’s why after applying insulin for a period of time in this kind of patients, the insulin dosage is reduced or even can be stopped. And if we can’t control the patient’s blood sugar well in the above stage, the injured beta cells will eventually die, which will accelerate the process of diabetes. The second situation: in patients with long duration of type 2 diabetes or type 1 diabetes, the pancreatic beta cells are getting fewer and fewer, and in the end, they may be almost dead and can only be treated with exogenous insulin replacement. Oral insulin? Two patients once approached me and showed me a bottle of medication that said “oral insulin” on it. Their financial situation was not good, and I had no choice but to tell them that they had been duped. Although oral medication is convenient and insulin injection is painful, there is really no oral insulin available so far. So why is there no oral one? The reason is simple, the essence of insulin is protein, just like the “lean meat” we eat, our gastrointestinal tract originally likes glucose, protein and other nutrients, so once insulin enters the gastrointestinal tract, it is immediately treated as “delicious” digestion and decomposition into The amino acids are then absorbed, and the effect of insulin is not played at all. Not only insulin, but all protein-based drugs should not be taken orally! Chinese medicine for diabetes is better? The most basic treatment is diet and exercise, regardless of Chinese medicine and Western medicine. As for Chinese medicine, I believe that there is a drug that can lower sugar (I am a Western doctor, do not know Chinese medicine, do not dare to deny Chinese medicine). However, I am sure that when diabetes develops to a certain level, such as when the beta cells are all dead, Chinese medicine is useless, or the effect is negligible! I would like to ask patients to pay attention, to see Chinese medicine must go to the regular, the establishment of Chinese medicine hospital, do not believe in such as “ancestral secret recipe”, “a certain doctor” propaganda, also help to tell relatives and friends, to avoid being deceived. If you are cheated in other things, the loss is just a matter of life and death, but if you are cheated in medical treatment, you will lose your life !!!! There is no way to cure diabetes without diet control? The answer is clean: no. Not only do you have to control your diet, but you also have to exercise reasonably. It’s easy to say, but too difficult to do. I’ve always admired patients with well-controlled blood sugar over time, it’s a great cause. Can’t eat anything with diabetes? There is nothing that a diabetic cannot eat (compared to a gout patient, diabetes is lucky), but nothing should be eaten in excess, and the key is to limit and restrain yourself.
