”Congenital megacolon” is a common congenital disorder in children and is one of the most important causes of constipation. According to statistics, one in 5,000 newborns will suffer from this disease. In severe cases, no meconium is passed within 72 hours of birth, or only a small amount of meconium is passed, accompanied by symptoms of incomplete intestinal obstruction such as abdominal distention and vomiting. The symptoms of intestinal obstruction are not obvious in most children, and the main symptom is persistent constipation, with one bowel movement after a few days to a few weeks. Children often cry and restless, refusing to eat, vomiting, enema or laxatives, can be accompanied by more gas and fecal discharge, abdominal distension is then reduced, but after the constipation is back as before. Some children also have enteritis, and after constipation, they will have diarrhea again. With these symptoms, a rectal examination, rectal pressure measurement, abdominal X-ray and enema must be performed at the hospital to confirm the diagnosis. How does congenital megacolon occur? It turns out that during the development of the rectum and sigmoid colon in the mother’s womb, there is a lack of ganglia in the wall of the intestine, and the part of the intestine that lacks ganglia has no peristaltic function. The feces and gas in this part of the intestine and the above part of the intestinal cavity cannot be passed and expelled smoothly, and gradually accumulate, causing the intestinal cavity to swell and, over time, causing the colon to be particularly thick and swollen and the intestinal wall to become hypertrophied. The radical cure for correcting megacolon is surgery. The part of the intestine without the ganglion of the intestinal wall is removed, and the end of the rectum is anastomosed with the colon, preserving the anal sphincter. With modern advances in pediatric surgery and anesthesia techniques, surgery can be performed in the neonatal period. For children with less severe symptoms, conservative treatment can be used, i.e. regular enemas and laxatives, oral administration of Chinese herbal medicines such as decoction of fire hemp seed, raw earth, hedgehog, Chuan puff, guajia seed, rhubarb, etc., or Chinese medicines such as hemp seed pill and Wang’s Baochi pill.
