Fractures in the lower leg should take at least three months to heal before walking. Fractures are usually the result of severe trauma, mostly in the mid calf, and take longer to heal because of poor blood flow to this area. A minor calf fracture with only one fracture line can be treated conservatively by immobilization in a cast for 6 weeks followed by an x-ray. If there is scab growth, the cast can be removed for functional exercise, but you cannot walk yet, so you can do straight leg raising exercises and ankle flexion and extension activities in bed. If the fracture is crushed or displaced, surgery is needed to fix the fracture with plate or intramedullary nail, and after the surgery, the patient still needs to take three months to recuperate, during which time he/she cannot walk with weight and needs to walk on the ground with the help of double crutches, and then he/she can resume normal walking after the fracture is completely healed. In addition, after the fracture of the lower leg, the patient needs to supplement high protein food, such as eggs and fish, which can promote the healing of the fracture end.
