Efficacy and Effectiveness of Balsam Forsythia

Xiang Fu has the efficacy of relieving liver stagnation, regulating qi and relaxing the middle (regulating the qi of the spleen and stomach), regulating menstruation and relieving pain. It is used for liver depression and stagnation of qi, distension and pain in the chest and ribs, hernia pain and other conditions. Xiang Fu, pungent, slightly bitter, slightly sweet, flat in nature. It belongs to the liver, spleen and San Jiao meridians. Clinically, it is used for breast distension and pain, stagnation of qi in the spleen and stomach, plumpness in the epigastrium (stomach and abdomen), distension and pain, and menstrual irregularities. If Xiang Fu is used for the treatment of distension and pain in the ribs and wounds caused by liver depression and stagnation of qi, it is often combined with medicines to relieve the liver and promote the flow of qi, such as with Chai Hu and Chuan Xiong; for the treatment of pain in the stomach and epigastric region caused by cold condensation and stagnation of qi, and liver depression and offense of the stomach, it is often combined with medicines to warm the center and relieve pain (to alleviate the pain through the warmth of the spleen and stomach), such as with Gaoliangjiang; and for the treatment of pain in a hernia, which may start and stop at any time, or for the pain in a scrotum that falls and becomes hard and painful, it is often combined with Fennel and Wu Zhuyi. Attention should be paid to qi deficiency without stagnation; yin deficiency, blood heat should be cautious to take Xiang Fu.
