What to do when an elderly person suddenly has a sore throat that is too much to bear

Sudden unbearable throat pain in the elderly may be caused by acute pharyngitis, acute tonsillar inflammation or acute infectious epiglottitis, which can be dealt with by general treatment, medication and surgery.
1. Acute pharyngitis: acute inflammation of the mucosa and submucosal tissues of the pharynx caused by viral, bacterial and other pathogenic infections and environmental factors. Pharyngeal pain is obvious, aggravated by swallowing, can radiate to the ear, and even have fever and other systemic symptoms. Amoxicillin and other anti-infective treatment, ribavirin and other anti-viral treatment can be applied; compound borax solution gargle, iodine tablets and other containing treatment.
2. Acute tonsillitis: mostly caused by type B hemolytic streptococcus, resulting in severe sore throat, obvious when swallowing, accompanied by dysphagia. Leads to sudden unbearable throat pain in the elderly. Treatment preferred penicillin static anti-infective treatment, may be appropriate application of hormones, such as dexamethasone; severe pain can be oral ibuprofen and other antipyretic analgesic.
3. Acute infectious epiglottitis: mostly caused by infection, trauma, adjacent tissue infection. The onset of the disease is acute, with symptoms such as sore throat, fever, dysphagia and dyspnea. Treatment selection of adequate amount of antibiotics and glucocorticoids, preferred cephalosporins or amoxicillin clavulanate potassium antibiotics. Abscess formation after incision and drainage of pus, if necessary, tracheotomy to keep the airway open.
Elderly people suddenly sore throat unbearable may have other causes, it is recommended that the patient immediately to the hospital for consultation, follow the doctor’s instructions for medication and treatment.
