Diffuse heterogeneous changes of the thyroid gland are considered a possible problem of Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Diffuse heterogeneous changes in the thyroid gland, i.e., diffuse enlargement of the thyroid gland, may be smooth on palpation or may be palpable as nodules of varying size. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is an autoimmune inflammatory disease of the thyroid gland, and most tests of thyroid hormone levels show markedly elevated thyroglobulin antibodies and thyroid anti-peroxidase antibodies, which gradually progress to subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism as the antibodies destroy the follicular cells of the thyroid gland. In clinical cases of subclinical hypothyroidism or hypothyroidism, it is necessary to determine, in conjunction with thyroid-stimulating hormone levels, whether levothyroxine sodium needs to be initiated for treatment. For thyroid ultrasound findings of diffuse non-homogeneous changes in the thyroid gland, consultation with the endocrinology department of a regular hospital is recommended.
