A lid gland cyst, also known clinically as a lid cyst, may be associated with chronic conjunctivitis or blepharitis, resulting in blockage of lid gland secretions. The eyes are normally lubricated because the lid glands secrete lipid-like substances that are evenly coated on the surface of the eye through the lid ducts, providing a lubricating and moisturizing effect on the eye surface. However, when the lid ducts become inflamed, some of the oil secretions from the lid glands cannot be discharged smoothly and become blocked in the lid ducts, and over time, they accumulate and form these hard, granular bumps, which are called lid cysts, or what is commonly referred to as scotomas. This is a very common condition that is related to the individual’s body type.
