Calamus soaked wine has certain effects and functions of opening the orifices and expelling phlegm, awakening the mind and wisdom, resolving dampness and opening the stomach (normalizing gastrointestinal function by removing dampness), but the active ingredient is less, and it can’t play a role in treating diseases.
Chinese medicine calamus is the rhizome of calamus in the family of Tennantiaceae, which is harvested in the fall and winter seasons and dried in the sun for raw use. Its nature is warm, taste pungent, bitter. It belongs to the heart and stomach meridians. Its effects are to open the orifices and dispel phlegm, wake up the mind and benefit the intellect, dissolve dampness and open the stomach.
Clinically, it is used for the treatment of mental confusion caused by phlegm, dampness and filthiness obscuring the clear orifices (obscuring the seven orifices of the mouth, eyes, nose and ears), such as stroke and epilepsy; it can also be used for the treatment of amnesia, insomnia, palpitations (rapid heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), tinnitus and deafness, cholera, and so on.
It is also indicated for symptoms such as hypochondriac (abdominal) plumpness (stomach distension and discomfort), nausea (lack of appetite, reduced food intake) hypophagia, greasy moss, etc., caused by dampness and turbidity obstruction and dysfunction of transportation and digestion.
Adverse effects of calamus is not clear, contraindications are not clear, calamus soaked in wine can not replace the drug treatment of disease.
