From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), yellow and thick tongue coating is a manifestation of dampness-heat, which may be caused by dampness-heat in the liver and gallbladder (dampness-heat evils accumulated in the liver and gallbladder) or dampness-heat in the kidney meridian. From the perspective of TCM tongue diagnosis, different parts of the tongue are associated with different organs, and the root of the tongue is generally more related to the organs in the lower burner of the human body, such as the kidney, liver and gallbladder, and from the perspective of the moss, moss is yellow and thick, which is generally a manifestation of dampness-heat. Therefore, in most cases, the yellow and thick moss at the root of the tongue is related to the symptoms of damp-heat in the liver and gallbladder, and damp-heat in the kidney meridian. On the other hand, yellow and thick moss at the base of the tongue may also be related to factors such as living and eating habits. For example, if the patient does not pay attention to oral hygiene, often eats a diet high in yellow pigment or smokes for a long time, then the tongue coating at the base of the tongue may also become significantly yellow and thickened. TCM diagnosis needs to be combined with other symptoms of the patient to comprehensive analysis, in addition to observation of the tongue, but also need to ask the diagnosis, pulse, etc., we recommend that the patient go to a regular Chinese medicine hospital for further examination.
