The decision of how long you can bear weight in the presence of a fracture of the ankle bone must be based on the severity or displacement of the fracture. If there is an avulsion fracture of the internal or external ankle, it is usually predominantly a sprain and the fracture is relatively well aligned. After about 4 weeks of external fixation with a cast or splint, it is basically possible to put weight on the ground. Because weight bearing will not affect the stability of the ankle joint or the force on the ankle joint after an avulsion fracture, it will not lead to fracture displacement. If the internal or external ankle is displaced after a fracture, although a reset or surgical internal fixation is given, weight bearing must wait until the fracture has complete bone scab growth, which must wait until about 6-8 weeks after the fracture.
