Eating sugar has no direct effect on vision, but there is evidence that eating sugar may have an indirect effect on vision. If a person with diabetes still eats sugar, it may cause diabetic retinopathy, which leads to macular degeneration of the retina or macula and vision loss. In addition, people who eat more sugar have a higher incidence of myopia compared to those who don’t. It is important to note that although sugar consumption may affect vision to some extent, sugar is an essential nutrient for the body and as long as the daily intake is maintained at a healthy amount, it will not have adverse effects on the body. Eating sugar in small amounts alone may not have a significant impact on vision, whereas if a diabetic eats sugar and causes diabetic retinopathy it can negatively affect vision.
