Insights from an Oncologist

The new treatment concept includes not only traditional surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, biotherapy, palliative care, targeted therapy and anti-angiogenic therapy, but also pain relief, nutritional support, palliative care and daily care. A complete treatment should actually consist of timely anti-cancer intervention, frequent palliative care and palliative reduction, and care and comfort from the beginning to the end. Chemotherapy is a kind of treatment that uses chemical drugs to kill tumor cells, inhibit the growth and reproduction of tumor cells and promote the differentiation of tumor cells. It is a systemic treatment that has therapeutic effects on primary foci, metastases and subclinical metastases, but chemotherapy treatment kills normal cells and immune (resistance) cells along with tumor cells. The common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, bone marrow suppression, liver and kidney damage, etc. Our department has accumulated rich experience through long-term clinical practice, and through improved protocols, the occurrence of adverse reactions has been significantly reduced. Many patients are very afraid before chemotherapy, but after they really receive treatment, they will realize that chemotherapy is far from the “legendary” tolerance, and after they relax, they will accept the follow-up treatment easily and happily. Many post-operative patients have improved their general condition after chemotherapy compared to before treatment, gaining weight, looking rosier, and being more energetic. The good doctor-patient relationship makes many patients laughingly talk about “I miss you guys and come to see my old acquaintances!” every time they come to the hospital for treatment. All of this cannot be achieved without the careful treatment and advanced technology of our team. Cancer treatment depends not on one person, but on a team; not on one department, but on the cooperation of all related departments; not on one discipline, but on the collaboration of multiple disciplines; not on one family responsibility, but on the responsibility of the whole society. May we exchange our persistence and hard work for more health and longer happiness of patients.
