Stomach distention caused by gallstones may be caused by bile-heat that offends the stomach, gastric disharmony (obstruction of the stomach’s descending and ventilating functions), and qi reversing to the upper level in Chinese medicine, and can be treated with Xiao Chai Hu Tang.
Xiao Chaihu Tang consists of Chaihu, Scutellaria baicalensis, Ginseng, Semixia, Radix et Rhizoma Glycyrrhizae, Ginger and Jujubae. In the formula, Chaihu transmits the evil of the Shaoyang and releases the stagnation of qi. Scutellaria baicalensis clears the heat of Shaoyang half-li. The combination of the ascending and dispersing properties of Chai Hu and the descending and draining properties of Scutellaria Baicalensis is the basic combination for the treatment of external heat illnesses in which the evil is between the half-expression and half-li.
