Diabetes is a common chronic non-communicable disease and a lifelong condition that can be prevented, controlled but not cured. According to figures released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), there are currently more than 250 million people with diabetes worldwide, and the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that nearly 80% of deaths from diabetes and its complications occur in low- and middle-income countries. Needless to say, proper prevention and control measures for diabetes will not only greatly reduce the prevalence of diabetes, but also significantly improve the quality of life and prolong the survival time of diabetics. It is a consolation to mankind that in the past hundred years, through the persistent pursuit of several generations of scientists, people have found many effective treatments, such as: insulin pump intensive therapy, stem cell therapy, islet transplantation, etc., which have played an important role in daily clinical practice and benefited millions of diabetic patients. This is the result of technological progress and the struggle of countless medical scientists, permeated with the sweat and expectations of several generations. The premise that these advanced treatment measures can be effectively implemented in daily work is based on the understanding of the majority of diabetic patients and the majority of doctors of the basics of diabetes, especially the accurate grasp of reasonable diet and regular exercise. At present, the highest level of treatment for diabetic patients is to actively control blood sugar and delay or prevent the occurrence and progression of chronic complications. This is because contemporary science has not yet been able to completely cure it. If we think of diabetes treatment as building a high rise building, diet is the foundation, if the foundation is not strong, how can the high rise building be built. If our doctors and nurses do not pay attention to the knowledge of diabetes education, do not pay attention to the management of diet, do not pay attention to the combination and adjustment of various nutrients, but only apply drugs, do not ask what to eat for three meals, it is difficult for diabetic patients to meet the blood sugar standards. In view of this, this year’s Diabetes Day once again highlights the theme of “education and prevention”, calling on people to arm themselves with more comprehensive knowledge about diabetes and use a healthier lifestyle to fight and control this persistent human disease. As those who have gone before us plant trees, those who come after us take advantage of them. Our generation is privileged to be able to quickly connect with the rapidly developing world of high technology and to be able to quickly translate the cutting-edge results of scientists’ research on diabetes treatment into clinical practice. However, we must not forget the basic principles of diabetes treatment. In our daily work, we should also take the initiative and physically teach about diabetes, popularize diabetes knowledge, so that every patient and their family members can understand this knowledge, recognize diabetes and its hazards thus enhancing the awareness of disease prevention. Since early childhood, we have been learning A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, and will use A, B, C, 1, 2, 3 throughout our lives, and these most simple letters and numbers become the beginning of a colorful life. The treatment of diabetes should also start with health education and the most basic dietary treatment. From 2009 to 2013, the theme of World Diabetes Day will be “Diabetes Education and Prevention”, which will remain the same for five years, in order to strengthen people’s awareness of the prevention and control of diabetes, and to warn all diabetic workers to start with the ABCs. The theme will remain the same for five years, aiming to strengthen people’s awareness of diabetes prevention and control, and to warn all diabetes careers to start with the ABCs.
