The capsule endoscope looks like a quick-acting cold capsule that the patient can swallow with a sip of water. It will naturally pass through the esophagus, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ileum, and colon, taking images along the way, and will eventually pass out of the body by itself through a bowel movement. These images are transmitted to a data recorder worn on the patient’s waist or chest and abdomen, and the physician can see them clearly on a computer to make a diagnosis of the disease. Capsule endoscopy is easy to examine, painless, non-invasive, non-radioactive, capsules are disposable, non-cross-infected, and can be freely moved without affecting the patient’s normal work. Gastroscopy can only view the esophagus, stomach and part of the duodenum, colonoscopy can only view the colon and rectum, while the 5-7 meter long small intestine (jejunum and ileum) cannot be seen, capsule endoscopy can then examine the entire small intestine, thus expanding the field of view of the gastrointestinal examination. Capsule endoscopy is one of the most advanced methods for the diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases, especially small bowel diseases, today. Indications for capsule endoscopy: ① unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, no positive findings by gastroscopy and colonoscopy; ② other imaging examinations suspecting small intestinal lesions; ③ various inflammatory bowel diseases, but not including intestinal obstruction and intestinal stenosis; ④ unexplained iron deficiency anemia; ⑤ unexplained chronic abdominal pain, diarrhea and wasting; ⑥ clinical suspicion of intestinal tuberculosis and small intestinal tumors; ⑦ middle-aged and above in good economic condition (vii) middle-aged or above with good financial situation. Contraindications to capsule endoscopy: ① clear or suspected gastrointestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal malformation, gastrointestinal perforation, stenosis and fistula, because there is a risk that the camera capsule will not pass through the intestine smoothly; ② serious swallowing difficulties, can not swallow the camera capsule smoothly; ③ implanted in the body pacemaker or other electronic devices, because electronic devices will interfere with the normal work of the capsule endoscopy.
