How to treat cold hands and feet

Cold hands and feet are mostly caused by coldness in the spleen and stomach (spleen and stomach are weak and cold), and can be treated with herbs such as Wen Spleen Tang and Si Rei San under the guidance of a Chinese medicine practitioner.

Wen Spleen Tang has the effect of attacking the cold accumulation and warming the spleen and yang, and is used to treat cold accumulation of yang deficiency with constipation and abdominal pain, colic around the umbilicus, and lack of warmth in the hands and feet.

Si Reverse San has the efficacy of dispersing the liver and regulating the spleen, and is used in treating Yang depression and syncope (cold limbs due to poor circulation of Yang qi), symptoms of which may include lack of warmth in the hands and feet, abdominal pain, and heaviness in the lower part of the body due to discharge, as well as treating Liver-Spleen disharmony (failure of coordination between the liver and the spleen), which may be characterized by distension of the hypochondrium and ribs, and pain in the epigastrium (stomach), and other conditions.

The adverse reactions and contraindications of the above two formulae are not known.

When discomfort occurs, one should consult a doctor promptly and select medication under the physician’s guidance of identification and diagnosis, rather than self-medicating to avoid delaying the condition.
