People with diabetes who have a combination of peripheral neuropathy or peripheral vascular disease may have weakness in their legs. Diabetic complications include peripheral neuropathy and peripheral vascular disease, which affect all body systems and tissues, including the lower extremities. If the blood vessels in the lower extremities become narrowed and occluded, or if peripheral neuropathy develops, this may manifest as weakness, pain, or in severe cases, the inability to walk. Therefore, diabetic patients need to be regularly screened for diabetic complications in order to detect and intervene early in diabetes-related complications.
