steward scoring criteria

The Steward score is usually applied to assess the patient’s degree of awakening after general anesthesia and includes three major aspects: 1) degree of wakefulness; 2) degree of airway patency; and 3) degree of limb mobility. Each item is scored out of two, with 2 points for full wakefulness, 1 point for responsiveness to stimuli, and 0 points for unresponsiveness to stimuli. The degree of respiratory tract patency, coughing and sputum as ordered by the physician, 2 points, maintaining respiratory tract patency on their own, 1 point, and requiring support, 0 points. Limb mobility, 2 points for conscious movement of limbs, 1 point for unconscious movement of limbs, 0 points for no movement of limbs. A total score greater than 4 points may be considered for leaving the operating room or anesthesia recovery room.
