Does advanced closed-angle glaucoma require surgery?

Advanced closed angle glaucoma usually requires surgery to control further optic nerve atrophy and visual field loss. For early stage closed angle glaucoma, laser treatment, such as peripheral iris laser perforation, is usually used, and surgery is usually not required if the IOP can be effectively controlled. However, for patients with advanced closed angle glaucoma, since laser treatment is no longer effective in reducing IOP, surgical treatment such as trabeculectomy is required to control further optic nerve atrophy and visual field defects. Closed angle glaucoma is a common ophthalmologic disease, which usually occurs when the intraocular pressure rises due to aging, such as aggravation of stenosis of the atrial angle. Patients with closed-angle glaucoma are advised to seek prompt medical attention to evaluate their condition and follow their doctor’s instructions.
