Can cancer be detected by checking tumor markers

Abnormal tumor markers do not necessarily detect cancer. In clinical practice, tumor markers are mainly used to evaluate the response of patients with diagnosed tumors to treatment and whether the condition recurs. Although some tumor markers have certain specificity, they can be significantly elevated in non-tumor diseases, such as CA199, which is significantly elevated in gastric cancer and pancreatic cancer, but also in cholelithiasis and cirrhosis of the liver; CA125, which is significantly elevated in gynecology, such as ovarian cancer, is also elevated in uterine adenomyosis and pelvic inflammatory disease. So you can’t assume there is cancer just because the tumor markers are elevated.
