Should I check for tumor markers on my physical exam?

It is needed, and the examination program is different for different people. 1. Generally speaking, imaging can only detect a tumor when it is large enough. Tumor markers can detect tumors when they are very small, ranging from three to several months earlier than imaging tests. 2. For medical checkups aimed at health monitoring and disease prevention, it is recommended to screen for important tumor markers such as carcinoembryonic antigen, alpha-fetoprotein, glycoprotein 199, male prostate-specific antigen and so on, in order to achieve early detection of possible tumors. 3. For people with family history of tumor, people with previous history of tumor and patients with precancerous lesions, regular review is recommended. 4. However, tumor markers are not the only basis for tumor diagnosis, but should be considered together with other means such as clinical symptoms and imaging examinations. Tumor diagnosis must be based on histopathology or cytopathology. If there is obvious elevation of tumor markers, one should go to the hospital in time to find out the cause of the disease, so as to avoid delaying the condition.
