There are many scriptural formulas for treating physical weakness in the elderly, such as Roasted Licorice Tang and Xiao Jianzhong Tang.
1. Xiao Jianzhong Tang is used to treat the deficiency labor and internal urgency syndrome of deficiency and cold in the middle jiao. Clinical manifestations include hidden pain in the abdomen, liking warmth and pressure, which comes and goes, or palpitation (accelerated heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), irritability, lack of honor in the face, and pale tongue with white coating.
This formula is composed of Gui Zhi, Paeoniae Alba, Glycyrrhiza Uralensis, Ginger, Caramel and Jujubes. It has the efficacy of warming the middle Jiao, tonifying the deficiency, easing the urgency and relieving pain. It should not be used in cases of Yin deficiency with fever, and is contraindicated in cases of Spleen deficiency with Dampness (weakness of the Spleen and retention of Dampness). Adverse effects are not clear.
2. Roasted Licorice Tang is indicated for cardiopulmonary qi, blood, yin and yang deficiency syndrome. Clinical manifestations include palpitation, cough, emaciation, tiredness, shortness of breath, poor sleep, sweating, and a weak pulse.
Effects: Benefiting Qi, nourishing Yin and nourishing Blood (nourishing the blood in the body), restoring Yang and restoring the pulse (restoring normal pulse), tonifying the lung and moistening dryness. It should not be used with caution in cases of yin deficiency, and should not be used in cases of spleen deficiency and dampness. Adverse effects are not known.
