The main treatment for epilepsy includes herbal formulas with additions and subtractions based on the main formula of Huanglian Xieyu Tang combined with Definitive Eclampsia Pill, and Longdian Diarrhea and Liver Tang combined with Phlegm Cleansing Tang.
Epilepsy belongs to the category of “epilepsy” in Chinese medicine. It is mostly caused by emotional disorders, dietary disorders, traumatic brain injury, etc., resulting in damage to the brain orifices, causing disorder of the internal organs, blockage of phlegm and obstruction of qi, and internal movement of wind and sun. Treatment for epilepsy is to clear liver fire and open the orifices to alleviate epilepsy; treatment for the resting period is to strengthen the spleen and resolve phlegm, nourish the heart and tranquilize the mind.
Huanglian Xieyu Tang combined with Dinhuang Pill can open the orifices to awaken the mind, expel heat and eliminate phlegm to relieve wind, and treat epilepsy in the seizure phase. Eclampsia is caused by liver wind and phlegm, obscuring the clear orifices (obscuring the seven orifices of the mouth, eyes, nose and ears), and causing qi and blood to be disorganized. Clinical manifestations include sudden fainting, unconsciousness, clenched teeth, upward gaze of the eyes, and rigidity of the neck and back.
The addition and subtraction of Gentian Diarrhea and Liver Tang combined with Phlegm Cleansing Tang can clear the liver and diarrhea fire, resolve phlegm and calm the heart, and treat the evidence of liver fire and phlegm-heat in the rest period. It is caused by liver depression and transforming fire (liver qi is blocked leading to the production of fire-heat evil qi), and phlegm-fire exuberates internally, disturbing the vital spirit upwards. It manifests as usual irritability, red face and eyes, heartburn and insomnia, spitting phlegm and roaring during attacks.
If there is any discomfort, it is recommended to actively seek medical attention, under the guidance of the physician’s diagnosis and standardization of medication, not self-medication, so as not to delay the condition.
