What causes the liver to become smaller

Smaller liver is seen in cirrhosis, or liver atrophy due to intrahepatic bile duct stones, or acute severe hepatitis. The above diseases require improvement of relevant examinations, such as liver ultrasound, upper abdominal CT, liver function, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, etc., to clarify the cause. If the liver atrophy is caused by cirrhosis, active symptomatic and supportive treatment is needed, such as antiviral and anti-fibrotic treatment if necessary. If the liver is small due to acute severe hepatitis, artificial liver support therapy is also required if necessary. If the liver is small due to intrahepatic bile duct stones, surgery may be required to remove the already small, atrophied liver.
