Rupture of the Achilles tendon is a relatively common condition in which the Achilles tendon is formed by the fusion of the tendons of the triceps muscles of the lower leg (soleus, gastrocnemius medial and lateral head) just above the heel. Normally, the Achilles tendon is a relatively uniformly thick and thin tendinous structure with excellent continuity and stops at the heel bone. Rupture of the Achilles tendon can be diagnosed by ultrasound. In the case of a partial rupture of the Achilles tendon, an interruption of the partial echogenicity of the Achilles tendon fibers can be seen, with localized hematoma formation. Also due to the presence of inflammation, the Achilles tendon will appear swollen. In the case of a complete rupture of the Achilles tendon, there is a complete interruption of the echogenicity of the fibers of the Achilles tendon, as well as retraction of the proximal muscles and hematoma formation between the two ruptured ends.
