Interventional Technology Partners with Charity Foundation to Protect Children with Pre-existing Heart Disease

Dongdong of Jixian Manchu Autonomous Township in Tianjin is six years old and will start elementary school next year, but his mother and father have a heart problem that they can’t let go of. It turns out that Dongdong often has a cold and fever since he was a child, and was found to have congenital heart disease and atrial septal defect after examination. When the family was hesitant to operate, the congenital heart disease screening team from Tianjin Medical University General Hospital came to the township and they also found out Dongdong’s heart disease. To the delight of Dongdong’s parents, this surgery can now be solved without an operation, with cardiac interventional technology. What surprised Dongdong’s parents even more was that, considering the actual financial difficulties of Dongdong’s family, the General Hospital and the Tianjin Charity Association cooperated to create the “Micro Dust Fund”, which decided to subsidize Dongdong’s treatment cost of 20,000 RMB. One day in June this year, Dongdong’s interventional septal defect closure surgery was completed in half an hour, and the child was discharged from the hospital two days later. The total treatment cost of more than 30,000 yuan, excluding the 20,000 yuan of charity funding, and then reimbursed by medical insurance, the child was cured of the heart disease without any surgery and without spending money at home. Now, looking at the child playing with his buddies, Dongdong’s parents are really relieved. Little XiXi of Baodi District had a similar experience. XiXi’s parents were divorced and reorganized their family. She was older and had a child of her own, but she was born with a congenital heart defect and an unclosed ductus arteriosus. Because of this disease, the child grew up weak and sickly, two and a half years old, but thin, less than 10 kg, walking without strength. Seeing their child like this, XiXi’s parents finally made up their mind and they approached the General Hospital Cardiovascular Surgery Department. Considering that XiXi’s family is poor, the “Dust Foundation” also provided a grant of 20,000 RMB. One month ago, XiXi’s interventional blocking of her unclosed artery was completed in less than an hour and she was discharged from the hospital two days later. With the medical insurance reimbursement, XiXi’s family spent almost no money on their own and the child’s heart condition was completely cured. XiXi’s father said, “I’ve been upset since I found out my child had heart disease after birth. I went to several hospitals, but either the surgery was open or the child’s weight was too small to do it, thanks to the advanced technology of the General Hospital. Now, the child did not have to undergo surgery, the family did not spend money, the disease was cured, where to find such a happy thing”. Liang Degang, deputy director of our cardiovascular surgery department, said that the interventional treatment of congenital heart disease has been carried out in China for several years and has saved many sick children from the trauma and risk of surgery. The vast majority of arteriovenous ductus arteriosus, most atrial septal defects, pulmonary valve stenosis, and some ventricular septal defects can receive interventional treatment. For children from low-income, poor and migrant families, the “Dust Fund” established by the General Hospital and the Tianjin Charity Association can also provide charity aid of 10,000-20,000 yuan, and counting the medical insurance reimbursement after discharge, the families of sick children basically do not have to spend any money. At present, the cardiovascular surgery department of our hospital has good interventions for congenital heart disease, including atrial septal defect, ventricular septal defect, arterial catheterization and pulmonary valve stenosis, and the youngest child receiving interventions is 2 years old and 10 kg, which other hospitals in Tianjin are not capable of doing. Adult patients with precordial disease can also receive interventional treatment. The oldest patient saved by cardiac surgery was 63 years old, and this elderly patient with atrial septal defect also recovered from atrial fibrillation after receiving blocking surgery.
