How to tell if an abdominal mass is from the abdominal cavity or the abdominal wall

When an abnormal mass is palpated on physical examination of the abdomen, attention should be paid to its location, size, shape, texture, tenderness, whether it is pulsating, and degree of mobility. In addition, attention should also be paid to the relationship between the mass and the abdominal wall and skin, in order to identify the mass from the abdominal cavity or the abdominal wall, the following method can be used, ask the patient to lie on his back, first pay attention to check the size of the mass when the abdominal muscles are relaxed, texture, etc., and then let the patient raise his head to try to sit up or legs lifted up in the air, as well as breath holding and exerting force, etc., to make the abdominal muscles tense, intra-abdominal pressure increases, at this time, if the swelling is more pronounced, then it suggests that the mass is located in the surface of the abdominal muscles. If the mass disappears, it means that the mass is located in the deep surface of the abdominal muscle or in the abdominal cavity.
