The question is often raised: “Western medicine has a lot of side effects and children tend to become stupid”. I have this viewpoint on this issue: First of all, drugs, especially prescription drugs, have more or less side effects while they have the positive effects needed to cure diseases, so that a professional doctor is needed to exercise the right to prescribe them in order to use them in a reasonable and safe way. Therefore, the same situation exists for both Chinese and Western medicines, both of which may have some side effects. Western medicine has strict drug composition and quantitative standards accurate to milligrams (or even smaller units), which is easier for clinicians to grasp. Of course, TCM also has its own standards for ingredients, varieties, and dosages. In most cases, with the strict control of a professional doctor with prescribing authority, the use of drugs should be safe. In addition to the doctor’s professional skills and the quality of the medication, the safety of the medication also requires the active cooperation of the patient and the child’s parents, who should follow the doctor’s instructions and give feedback to the doctor in a timely and accurate manner so that the doctor can grasp the patient’s condition and response to the medication, and the doctor and the patient can work together so that the safety of the medication can be guaranteed and the treatment will not be delayed.
