Can the meniscus be replaced?

Meniscus replacement is possible. In certain cases, an artificial brace can be used, a full meniscus can be transplanted, or a direct knee replacement can be performed. The role of the meniscus is mainly to protect the joint by dampening the knee during sports. Injuries to the meniscus are mainly due to injuries sustained during sports or due to age. In the treatment of meniscus injuries, the doctor will choose a treatment plan based on the condition of the meniscus. For patients with less severe meniscus injuries, they will often choose to have the damaged portion removed or surgically repaired. In more severe injuries where some meniscus tissue can be preserved, artificial braces can be considered to replace the lost meniscus tissue, and if the patient has lost the meniscus completely, surgical transplantation will be considered. Total knee replacement may also be performed if the patient has other more serious knee lesions in addition to the meniscus injury. Replacement of meniscus requires strict indications for surgery and should be done in a regular hospital under the guidance of a professional physician, who will decide whether to replace it and how to do the surgery in the light of his/her own condition.
