Pre-exposure prophylactic booster vaccination with rabies vaccine is mainly for high-risk groups, depending on the specific level of risk, rabies virus titer level every six months to every three years, and rabies vaccine booster injection when the titer is <0.5 IU/mL. There is no clear guideline recommendation in China, according to the new version of the rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis guideline issued by the CDC, for people who can be exposed to rabies virus or animals that transmit rabies virus, they first need to carry out the basic immunization of rabies vaccine, for a total of two doses of vaccine injections on the 0th day to the 7th day. Then, depending on the level of risk graded, rabies virus titers should be checked every 6 months for people who work with rabies virus in laboratories; every 2 years for people who have regular contact with bats and animal carcasses; and every 1-3 years for veterinarians, wildlife biologists, animal control officers, and cave explorers. If the titer drops to <0.5 IU/mL, a booster shot is required. Because of the almost 100% lethality of rabies once it develops, pre-exposure booster vaccination prophylaxis is necessary for high-risk groups, but routine booster vaccination prophylaxis is not necessary for other groups.
