The Secret of Painless Gastroscopy

China is a country with a high incidence of stomach cancer and a high mortality rate of stomach cancer. Every year, many people die from stomach cancer in China. According to the relevant information, most patients are already in the middle and late stage when they are discovered. Early gastric cancer is treated well and the survival rate can be up to more than 95%, but the current detection rate of early gastric cancer is only about 5%-10%. As gastrointestinal surgeons, we have the obligation to call on the public to be aware of medical checkups, raise their vigilance and prevent gastric cancer in time. Timely gastroscopy is crucial to detect early gastric cancer. Ordinary gastroscopy is done with the help of a tube sticking into the stomach with a camera at the head of the tube, which can see the situation inside the stomach clearly. However, many people are scared at the mention of gastroscopy. The vomiting reaction is so daunting that many people know they have stomach problems, but still refuse to undergo a general gastroscopy, missing the best opportunity for early diagnosis. Painless gastroscopy, which is a procedure that uses anesthetic drugs to render the subject unconscious so that the gastroscopy can be completed, has received great attention in clinical practice. However, this kind of painless gastroscopy still has a vomiting reaction, which is just unknown to the person being examined. And not everyone is suitable for painless gastroscopy, such as people with severe hypertension, diabetes, serious heart disease, asthma, cerebrovascular disease, poor cardiopulmonary function, general anesthesia may inhibit breathing, bringing certain risks to the examinees. With the new magnetic capsule gastroscopy, no anesthesia is required, as long as a pill-sized “capsule” is taken (see the diagram below). The capsule moves inside the patient with a magnetically controlled force and continuously takes images of the stomach. The images are transmitted through the sensor to the appropriate recorder. The whole procedure takes about 15-20 minutes, during which the patient can communicate with the doctor without any discomfort. The capsule gastroscope can also be used as a capsule endoscope, and after passing through the stomach, it continues to pass through the small and large intestines. The doctor views the condition of the stomach and intestines based on the tens of thousands of pictures in the recorder, and finally, the capsule that has completed its mission is automatically expelled from the body.
