Blockage of the lid gland may be due to chronic conjunctivitis or other causes of blepharitis, which may result in a poor outlet of the lid gland. The secretions from the lid gland are not properly discharged from the eyelid and are retained in the lid gland, causing chronic irritation to the surrounding tissues. This is usually seen in adolescents or middle-aged people, and is probably related to the high secretion of the lid glands. It can occur in the upper and lower lids at the same time or singly, and it is easy to see recurrent episodes. Smaller lid cysts can be treated without special treatment, with local heat, or can absorb on their own if they are long-lasting or growing, and may generally require surgery to remove them later.
