Functions and Effects of Nutmeg

Nutmeg’s effects include warming the middle Jiao, astringing the intestines and stopping diarrhea (relieving diarrhea by enhancing the function of intestinal astringency). Nutmeg is useful in treating cold spleen and stomach, prolonged diarrhea and dysentery, cold stomach and distension, and vomiting with little food.
The medicinal properties of nutmeg are pungent and warm. It belongs to the spleen, stomach and large intestine meridians. Nutmeg is pungent and dispersing, has the effect of warming the middle of the spleen, removing cold and drying dampness, moving qi and relieving pain (relieving pain by regulating the body’s qi), appetizing and eliminating food, and is often used in the treatment of abdominal distension and pain due to stagnation of cold and stagnation of qi, and regurgitation of food and vomiting with little food.
Nutmeg is pungent and warm, warming and descending, going to the middle and lower jiao, warming the spleen and stomach, lowering turbid qi, fixing the large intestine, and stopping diarrhea. It can be used to treat diarrhea caused by coldness of the spleen and stomach, like warmth and pressure, intestinal sounding without food, watery diarrhea, or loose stools caused by coldness of the spleen and kidneys, indigestion of food, and diarrhea at five o’clock (diarrhea before dawn).
Nutmeg should not be used for those with damp-heat diarrhea (diarrhea caused by feeling damp-heat evil) and those with stomach heat and pain. Chinese medicines need to be used under the guidance of a Chinese medicine practitioner’s diagnosis, and should not be used privately, so as not to cause damage to the organism.
