Newborn 8 days jaundice index 14.5mg/dL is serious

Jaundice index of 14.5mg/dL at 8 days of age in newborns may be pathologic jaundice in term infants, which is more serious. For preterm infants, it may be physiologic jaundice, which is less serious.
Neonatal jaundice refers to abnormal bilirubin metabolism in newborns, and the jaundice index of full-term infants does not exceed 12.9mg/dl, and the jaundice will subside in 2 weeks at the latest. In preterm infants, jaundice does not exceed 15mg/dl and subsides in 3-4 weeks at the latest. Therefore, the jaundice index of 14.5mg/dL at day 8 in full-term infants may be pathologic jaundice, which should be promptly examined by a doctor and can be treated by phototherapy.
For preterm infants with jaundice index of 14.5mg/dL at day 8, it may be physiologic jaundice, but they should also go to the hospital for examination, and if it is physiologic jaundice, it does not need special treatment.
When newborns have jaundice, parents should take their babies to the hospital and treat them according to the doctor’s judgment.
