Try to reconcile with yourself and let out your anger. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t want to spread the disease to your friends and family. Recognize the disease and look at it correctly, and try to fight against the feeling of losing control. Worry can be turned into mutual help, and family members can communicate and talk to each other more often. –Prof. Niu Wenyi, School of Public Health, Peking University School of Medicine The outbreak of the new coronavirus pneumonia and the continuous growth of the number of sick people have touched hundreds of millions of people’s hearts. Among them, the diagnosed patients, as the “parties” in the epidemic, are more complicated: they are angry at those who infected them and afraid of infecting others; they are full of uncertainty and anxiety about the treatment, but expect to get better as soon as possible. …… At this time, they need to protect their mental health. At this time, they need to ensure their mental health and to fight against the new pneumonia with good psychological support. 1. Try to reconcile with yourself (1) Calm your anger After getting sick, some patients will think: “How can I be so unlucky, I hate the person who infected me with the virus.” This kind of anger is a natural and normal emotional response, not a manifestation of their own awareness or lack of self-control, for diagnosed patients, it is particularly important not to be held hostage by this emotion, to try to accept the anger, can be through the crying, confiding in the way moderate catharsis. (2) Reduce self-blame Some patients think that they have dragged their family members and friends into the disease, but in fact, there are many other factors, such as natural and social factors, that have contributed to the spread of the epidemic, so they should try to reattribute the cause and blame, and the patient himself or herself is only one of the factors, and should not be held fully responsible. 2. During isolation, be alert to psychological problems (1) Correct understanding of the disease Patients may experience anxiety and nervousness after being isolated, with physical symptoms not related to the respiratory system, such as panic and fatigue, which in turn will aggravate the patient’s panic and affect the therapeutic effect. Patients should actively obtain information about the disease, for example, so far, there have been a number of cases of new pneumonia patients discharged from hospitals, and the death rate is relatively low; in the course of treatment, neither underestimate the disease and act uncaring, nor blindly exaggerate and imagine that they are bound to die. (2) Fight against the “sense of loss of control” As patients must be hospitalized and isolated after diagnosis, they will be away from their families for a period of time, and patients who are more dependent and younger should be psychologically prepared for this. Patients can carry out some activities in the ward that help stabilize their emotions and physical recovery, such as moderate exercise, or listening to songs, watching videos, etc. to relax and regain a sense of control over their emotions; they can set some small goals according to the actual situation, such as cooperating with the doctor’s treatment, eliminating the symptoms, and being discharged from the hospital after recovering from the disease. (3) Turning worries into motivation for mutual support Some patients are very worried about the health of their family members after diagnosis. If the condition permits, they can communicate with their friends and relatives on the phone or through WeChat to fully understand the recent situation of their family members, inform them of the progress of their own treatments and the current situation of their bodies, and talk about interesting things in life with their family members for mutual encouragement and support, so as to provide sufficient psychological protection for the treatment.
