Perilla leaf has the function of dispersing cold, moving Qi and stomach, and calming the fetus. It is pungent and aromatic in taste, good at dispersing external evil, and mild in nature, good for treating colds in all seasons, regardless of heat or cold. Perilla leaf is good at regulating qi, and the smooth flow of qi restores water circulation, thus eliminating edema and scanty urination; if dampness is injected, resulting in edema of the lower limbs and numbness, it can be used together with large abdominal bark and papaya. Perilla leaf is pungent and soothing, moves qi and opens knots, and is good for treating a variety of conditions caused by qi stagnation, such as liver qi stagnation, phlegm and qi obstruction resulting in a foreign body feeling in the throat and unfavorable gulping. Perilla leaf can be used with Radix et Rhizoma Pinelliae and Rhizoma Polygonati. Perilla leaf can also regulate Qi and is good for treating vomiting in early pregnancy without harming the fetal element. Modern pharmacological studies have concluded that perilla leaves also have antibacterial and antiseptic effects.
