Paraquat is a commonly used weed control drug, but this drug is very toxic to human body. If accidentally taken orally, 5-15mL of 20% paraquat orally is enough to be fatal. The main cause of death caused by paraquat is respiratory and circulatory failure due to interstitial lung fibrosis. Paraquat is very toxic, but unfortunately there is no specific antidote for this drug. The main treatment is currently a combination of therapy, including reducing intestinal absorption, promoting excretion of toxins, blood purification, supportive therapy, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant therapy. The first choice among the drugs is hormones and immunosuppressive agents, which counteract nonspecific inflammation, thereby inhibiting collagen synthesis, suppressing pulmonary fibrosis, and thus reducing mortality. Next is acetylcysteine, which can play the role of antioxidant and reduce the mortality rate of paraquat poisoning patients. In addition, there is vitamin C. Vitamin C can effectively scavenge oxygen free radicals, which can also reduce the mortality rate of paraquat poisoning and improve the prognosis.
